Are you looking for a donut pillow that would relieve you of your lower back pain, hemorrhoids, or just make sitting down on hard seats easier? Hi, my name is Justin and I work as a computer engineer. I sit down 8 hours a day for work and, when I’m home, I sit down for another 8 hours as well. I get occasional hemorrhoids and have tried a lot of things to relieve the pain. I found that sitting down for hours a day really took a beating on my butt.
I decided to take my doctor’s advice and purchased a donut pillow from the local medial supply store. It was somewhat expensive since the demand for this product is quite low and, after a week of use, it helped my pain but the cushion sort of died on me.
I went online and realized that I could buy donut pillows online for half the price plus with a larger selection. I tested the 5 different donut pillows and found one that is now my all time favorite.
What to look for in a Donut Pillow
After trying out the 5 different seat cushions, I realized that there were 3 things that made or broke a donut pillow. If you are using this for medical reasons, you will be using it a lot and, because of that it should have these things:
- Sturdy. You are going to be sitting on this for several hours a day. You don’t want to purchase a flimsy pillow that would tear on you within a few weeks. There are some flimsy ones out there that are made of poor quality materials–watch out. These is a case of “you get what you paid for.”
- Composition. If you are going to be sitting on this for hours a day and months at a time, you would want a donut pillow that will not go soft after a few weeks. Yes, there are some cushions that use weaker foam that will go flat after awhile. Watch out for this as well.
- Looks. If you are going to sit on this at home, looks don’t matter that much but if you are bring it to work, make sure the pillow looks nice or at least put a pillow case around it. Some donut pillows come with a custom fit pillow case that looks just like any other pillow.
3 Really Good Donut Pillows
It was really hard to fine “the best” donut pill out there because, dude, a pillow’s a pillow unless it is a defunct pillow. These 3 were the ones I liked the most.
Rose 18 Inch Donut Cushion
This donut pillow was great! It is thick and has a comfortable firmness to it. It also comes with a custom cover so you can bring this to work and people won’t give you weird looks. It is also light enough to carry around.
I used it at work, at my home office chair, at a ball game, and in the car. The pillow fits any seat.
It is made with very good quality material and it does not feel like it’ll rip or tear any time soon. I highly recommend this one. Check it out here.
Duro-Med 18 Inch Molded Foam Donut Pillow
This donut cushion is almost exactly the same as the last one from Rose. The only difference is that it comes in a different shade of blue. It is also $7 cheaper. If you want to save some cash, get this one–I felt no difference between the Duro-Med and the Rose one. Get it here.
Carex Inflatable Ring Cushion
Now, this one is the curve ball. Unlike all the other stuff I tried, this one was not a real cushion! It is an inflatable tube that works just like any other donut pillow but without the pillow. You blow it up and sit on it. It has the rubber smell to it and looks kind of ugly, but if you put it inside a pillow case, you are good to go.
The advantages of this one compared to the Rose or Duro-Med model is that you can store it inside a suitcase when traveling easily. Just deflate it and put it in your briefcase. Whereas the other two models were my around town pillows, this one is my travel pillow.
The thick all natural rubber is very thick. You can’t pop it easily. There was a reviewer who weighted 280lbs and he has been using this pill for 6 months without ever reinflating it once.
Also, this pillow is the cheapest of all the pillows we purchased. It is $10.54 from Amazon.
Don’t buy this Donut Cushion
This was the worse seat cushion ever. It sucked and became flat after a few sittings. Do not buy the MABIS Sliping Coccyx Cushion. There is not enough cushion in there to cushion anything.
Conclusion
So, what should you get? Get the Duro-Med Donut pillow since it is cheaper then the Rose version. Those two pillows are basically the same thing–I couldn’t tell the difference besides the color. Also, if you are traveling, get the inflatable donut pillow. It is quite nifty I have to say.
I have been using my donut pillows for about 4 weeks now. Not only does it relieve my hemorrhoid pains but it also improved my posture. It is harder to slouch down with a donut pillow. I wish I found out about these donut pillows earlier.
